Common Symptoms

What's your machine doing?

These are the patterns we see most often when customers come in saying 'something is wrong but I don't know what.'

Computer diagnostics are part of our computer repair service in Elk Grove.

Won't turn on

Press the power button and nothing happens, or it tries to boot and shuts off? Could be power, board, or boot drive, we narrow it down.

Random shutdowns

Computer turns off mid-task, sometimes restarts on its own, sometimes won't come back? Often thermal, sometimes power, sometimes drive.

Blue screen / kernel panic

Windows BSOD or macOS panic screen, even after restarting? The error codes tell us where to look: driver, RAM, drive, or board.

Running hot, fans loud

Computer is hotter than it used to be, fans spinning constantly even when idle? Could be dust buildup, thermal paste, or a runaway process.

Crashes mid-task

Specific apps crashing, especially demanding ones like Premiere, games, or design tools? Often GPU, RAM, or drive bottleneck.

Display issues

Screen flickering, weird colors, lines, dim display? Could be the display itself, the cable (laptops), or the GPU.

Slow, especially at startup

Takes forever to boot, programs take forever to open, hard drive making sounds? Drive degradation is the usual suspect.

Network drops constantly

WiFi keeps disconnecting, Bluetooth pairing fails, ethernet doesn't work? Network card, antenna, or driver problem.

Hangs / freezes

Computer locks up and you have to hold the power button to recover? Software conflict, driver issue, or hardware degradation.

Worked yesterday, broken today

No drop, no spill, no install, just stopped working overnight? Often an update gone wrong, a driver conflict, or a drive failure.

After a liquid spill

Spilled something, dried it out, and now things are weird? Corrosion can spread for days, we inspect the board.

Just bought it used

Used machine from Craigslist or Facebook? Smart move to have it inspected before you depend on it.

How it works

Four steps. No mystery.

We don't guess. We use proper diagnostic tools, methodical elimination, and hard-won pattern recognition to find the root cause.

1

Bring it in

Walk into our Elk Grove shop with the device. Tell us what you're seeing and when it started, even small details help.

2

Full diagnostic

We run hardware diagnostics (RAM, drive, GPU, thermal), software checks (event logs, drivers, malware), and physical inspection. Ask about turnaround when you check in; it depends on the repair and parts availability.

3

Diagnosis + quote

We tell you exactly what's wrong, what it'll cost to fix, and how long it'll take. Diagnostic fee quoted at check-in and applied to your repair if you proceed.

4

Repair or honest no

If it's worth fixing, we fix it. If the cost of repair is close to the cost of replacement, we'll tell you that honestly, no pressure to repair.

Why iGeek

Real diagnostic vs. quick guess.

Most shops want to skip diagnosis and just sell you a repair. Some won't diagnose at all unless you commit to the fix first. Here's how we line up.

On Pricing

The diagnostic fee, explained.

Diagnostic fee quoted at check-in and applied to your repair if you proceed. Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts.

Why charge for diagnosis? Because doing it properly takes a technician’s time and we use real diagnostic tools, not guesses. We’d rather charge fairly and get the answer right.

Once we know what’s wrong, we quote the repair up front. If the repair cost approaches what a replacement would cost, we tell you honestly. Some machines aren’t worth fixing, and you deserve to know that before you spend on a repair.

Frequently Asked

The questions we get most.

How much does a diagnostic cost?
Diagnostic fee quoted at check-in and applied to your repair if you proceed.
How long does it take?
Ask about turnaround when you check in; it depends on the repair and parts availability. We queue work in the order it comes in, so the wait depends on what’s ahead of you. We’ll give you a realistic estimate when you drop the device off.
What do you actually do during a diagnostic?
Depends on the symptoms. For a hardware-suspect issue: RAM tests, drive health checks, thermal monitoring, power tests, physical inspection. For software-suspect: event log analysis, driver audit, malware scan, startup audit. We follow where the symptoms lead.
What if you can't figure out what's wrong?
In practice this is rare. If we don’t think we can diagnose something, we usually won’t check it in to begin with. On the very intermittent issues where we run a full diagnostic and still can’t reproduce or identify the problem, we’ll be straight with you about it before you spend anything on a repair.
Do I have to commit to the repair before you diagnose?
No. The diagnostic and the repair are separate decisions. We tell you what we found, what it’ll cost, and you decide whether to proceed. No pressure either way.
What if it's not worth repairing?
We’ll tell you that. Some machines have failed parts where the repair cost is close to the cost of a comparable replacement. We’d rather you make that call with honest information than spend on a repair that doesn’t make sense.
Will the diagnostic damage my computer or wipe my files?
No. Diagnostics are non-destructive. We don’t install software, modify settings, or wipe anything during diagnostic work without telling you first. Your data and your setup are preserved.
Can you diagnose phones too?
Yes, iPhone and Android. Phone diagnostics are usually faster because the failure modes are more constrained (battery, screen, port, board, software).
Do you do remote diagnostics?
For some software issues, yes, we offer remote sessions. For hardware-suspect issues, we need the device in our shop.
